Shot peening is a cold working process to improve the fatigue strength of components which are subjected to cyclic loading. Surface development processes such as grinding, heat treatment, and machining can sometime become stress raisers and lead to introduction of tensile stress in the components. These tensile stresses lead to premature failure and reduce the life cycle of components. Shot peening under such circumstances converts the induced tensile stress into beneficial compressive residual stress. This compressive residual stress radically improves the load taking capacity of components and also increases the life cycle of components subjected to fluctuating loads.
